Clare Fitzgerald, SSND
Sister Clare Fitzgerald is a member of the Northeast Province of the School Sisters of Notre Dame. She previously served as provincial leader of her Province, as well as President of the Leadership Conference of Women Religious (LCWR). She was appointed to the Vatican Commission on the Study of Religious Life in the U.S., and has lectured to many religious communities in Canada and the U.S. Sister Clare received her undergraduate education at the college of Notre Dame in Maryland, and was later awarded an M.A. from Catholic University of America in Washington, D.C., and a Ph.D. degree from St. Louis University. For nine years, Sister Clare served as chair of the American Studies department at Fairfield University in Connecticut, before she moved on to found and direct for thirteen years, the Catholic School Leadership Program in the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences at Boston College, Massachusetts. Recent lecture engagements have brought her to the University of Cambridge in England, Oxford University, and St. Andrew’s College in Scotland. Sister Clare has received just about every award and commendation possible from the National Catholic Education Association, including the highest commendation for distinguished service in Anaheim, California(1986), The national award for outstanding contributions to leadership training in St. Louis(1992), the prestigious William H. Sadlier Dinger Award for distinguished contributions to Catholic Education in the U.S., and at the NCEA annual meeting(1997) another award in recognition of her outstanding service and commitment to excellence in Catholic Education.
