Richard Stallman writes important software programs used on tens of million of computers around the world (including thousands at UW alone). He gives them away free. He is the founder of the GNU Project, fundamental contributor to GNU/Linux systems, and the principal author of the GNU C Compiler (GCC), the GNU symbolic debugger (GDB), GNU Emacs and various other programs.
