The 2014-2015 Inaugural Resurrectionist Lecture on Christian Spirituality
Women in the Christian Tradition: Where Theology and Spirituality Meet Recognition by the official church has confirmed what many faithful have known for a long time — that women’s theology enriches the community with much-needed wisdom. The theologies of the four women Doctors of the Church — Catherine of Siena, Teresa of Avila, Thérèse of Lisieux and Hildegard of Bingen — are grounded in the Tradition, expressed in affective as well as intellectual ways, and brought to life through everyday experience. These women invite us to become “grassroots” theologians, filled with the desire to study the Tradition and give voice to our encounters with God in a complex, fragile world.
Elizabeth Dreyer
Elizabeth Dreyer is professor emerita of religious studies, Fairfield University. She brought her interest in Christian spirituality to several universities including the College of St. Catherine in St. Paul, Minnesota, the Catholic University of America, and the Washington Theological Union. Dr. Dreyer has written several books on medieval mysticism and has served as General Editor for the eight-volume series, Called to Holiness: Spirituality for Catholic Women. She wrote the inaugural volume for the series, Making Sense of God: A Woman’s Perspective (2008).
