Christians in Polictics

Drawing on his vast experience in international development, the labour movement, the media, politics and diplomacy, Gérard Pelletier will provide a broad outline of his life in public service motivated by faith.

Gérard Pelletier

Educated at the Colleges of Nicolet and Mont-Laurier at the University of Montreal, he was General Secretary of J.E.C (Young Christian Students) from 1939 to 1943. He served as Field Secretary for the World Student Relief Organization in Geneva, Switzerland from 1945 to 1947, and returned to Canada as a reporter for the Montreal daily Le Devoir from 1947-1950. He was editor of the labour weekly Le Travail from 1950 to 1961, and was editor of the Montréal daily La Presse from 1961 to 1965. He was elected to the House of Commons in 1965 and served as secretary of State and Minister of Communications in the Trudeau Cabinet. From 1975 to 1981 Mr. Pelletier was Canadian Ambassador to France, and from 1981 to 1984 served as Canadian Ambassador to the United Nations. He is presently President of the Centre Canadian d’Etudes et de Cooperation Internationale, a non-governmental organization active in thirty Third World Countries. He is authour of "The October Crisis" (1971), "Years of Impatience" (1983) and "Years of Choice" (1986).
