Patient Safety: A panel discussion on providing safe and effective healthcare in a hospital setting

Given how often Canadians use the emergency department, reducing waits and improving the patient experience is a priority for policy-makers. St. Mary's General Hospital started publishing live emergency department wait times online in April 2012 in an effort to provide patients with expectations on how long they will have to wait to be seen for non-urgent issues. While some say that this information is not helpful for improving the quality of emergency department services, those leading the charge to provide more information to the public about waiting times say that people have a right to know how long they might wait when they arrive at an emergency department.

Dr. Bob Wickett

St. Mary's General Hospital (SMGH) was founded over 85 years ago on the principles of inclusivity and openness. St. Mary's mission was simply to care for the sick and needy, especially the poor and marginalized. In the tradition of the founding order, the Sisters of St. Joseph of Hamilton, SMGH continues to provide a place of healing for all people — a place where the sick are cared for in body, mind, and spirit.
